Atrocities meted out to the Dalit Community in Maharashtra

The members of Dalit community were attacked on January 1st celebrations in Bhima Koregaon. Three lakh members had gathered in villages around Bhima Koregaon near Pune to attend an event commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Koregaon between the British army’s Mahar regiment and the Peshwa’s army. The function was seen as an assertion of Dalit identity by some groups and the attack on it as a challenge to the same. The question that arises is why were those who were celebrating their history attacked? What was their fault? There is nothing wrong in honoring the martial expertise and bravery of those belonging to the Dalit community. The celebration led to clashes between Dalits and upper castes resulting in the death of a man. Here lies the saddest part that even in the year 2018 the Indian society does not seem to have moved in from caste based oppression and violence. There have been instances of oppression meted out to Dalits even in the years gone by, for example, on May 2017 the mass attack on Dalits in Shabbipur village Saharanpur where a person was killed and 15 people were injured in clashes between Dalits and upper caste people. On September 2017, two Dalit men from a village near Gandhinagar in Gujarat were thrashed by members of the Rajput Community for sporting ‘moustache’. Taking into account all these incidents specially the assault of Dalits in Maharashta the National President of Human Rights Protection Association Mr. Shamim Ahmed feels annoyed that the Government of Maharashtra has become paralyzed as it cannot hear the screams of the Dalits. This is an extremely appalling condition for the Country. This event of uncouth behavior is not only against the Dalits but the entire Country. The way people had been wrongfully restrained and physically assaulted is not just shameful but a matter of concern. Human Rights Protection Association stands for all the Dalits who have been wronged and appeals to Maharashtra Government that an investigation be carried out on the entire matter and punish the ones who have done wrong instead of punishing the those who were only exercising their right to freedom of celebration because India is a country which guarantees freedom to its citizens and it should not be snatched away from them by any means.
